FUNDRAISERS

Dear Friend,

Gerard Dewan was born and raised in Roslindale and West Roxbury, MA. He graduated from Sacred Heart School in Roslindale and Don Bosco High School (Class of 1985). In 1996, Gerard moved to New York City to follow his lifelong dream of becoming a firefighter.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, Gerard and his coworkers from Ladder 3 in Manhattan were among the first to respond to the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center. We're told that Gerard made it to the 40th floor of the Tower 1 before the buildings collapsed. Gerard was one of the 343 FDNY heroes lost that day. He was only 35 years old.

To honor his kind and generous spirit, Gerard's nieces and nephews established the Gerard Dewan Memorial Fund, Inc., a 501 (c) 3 non-profit. The Fund's mission is to help children through grants to both families and organizations. Since 2002, the Fund has made annual donations to a scholarship fund at Sacred Heart School, local youth athletic organizations, and families in need during the holidays.

In 2007, Gerard's Fund helped endow the 6th Floor Patient and Family Resource Room at Children's Hospital Boston. The Resource Room is used to advance Children's mission "to provide not only the best medical care for children with cancer and blood diseases, but also the highest level of support for their families." This room provides educational programs, books, movies, video games, parking vouchers for families, parent bags, pizza parties, ice cream socials and much more to children and families battling cancer and other blood diseases.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. To honor Gerard, his Memorial Fund will host a "Red, White and Blue" barbecue fundraiser on Saturday evening, June 25th at Moseley’s on the Charles in Dedham.  While all proceeds will be used in support of the mission of the Gerard Dewan Memorial Fund, one of the primary beneficiaries will be the Patient and Family Resource Room at Children's Hospital Boston.

We hope that you will consider supporting this 10th anniversary event.  Please download a sponsor form here.

Gratefully,

Gerard Dewan Memorial Fund
